Traditionally, you and your honey are whisked away on your honeymoon within hours of your wedding ceremony. But in today’s busy world, a honeymoon immediately after your wedding day may not be an option. Whether this is because you’ve already opted for a destination wedding or time just won’t permit, it’s common for couples to delay their honeymoons. To this day I still haven’t had an official honeymoon, and my wedding was three years ago!

If you’re a traditional couple that can’t stand the idea of deferring your honeymoon, consider taking a short domestic trip. Although it might not immediately come to mind, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a city that offers the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway. Find a romantic hotel near Milwaukee and check out some of the best ways to celebrate your honeymoon here.

Take a Stroll Through Downtown

After you’ve settled into your hotel, head over to the Bay View neighborhood. Take a stroll down to the Third Ward and the downtown RiverWalk. This popular district is home to many of the city’s most popular eateries, pubs, and shopping attractions. Depending on the time of year, you’ll find various seasonal events like the summer concert series, Chill on the Hill in Humboldt Park.

While in the area, drop by the very popular Milwaukee Public Market. It’s home to a diverse array of vendors offering an assortment of foods ranging from ethnic cuisine to artisanal cheeses, beers, and wines.

Learn About Milwaukee’s Rich Brewing History

Milwaukee is home to numerous breweries, from craft microbreweries to the iconic MillerCoors brewery. Create your own mini beer tour by dropping by individual breweries, many of which have beer gardens with tasting menus and food pairings. Of course, you can always take one of the official brewery tours or book a multi brewery tour with a group. If you’re adventurous with your beer, book a tour with Pedal Tavern, which offers a traveling beer tour on a multi-pedal bike.

Kick Your Heels Up on the Waterfront

After you’ve drunk and eaten your fill, it’s time to explore the nightlife, another area where Milwaukee won’t disappoint. If you and your boo are diehard sports fans, Milwaukee is home to countless sports bars where you can cheer on your favorite team.

If you prefer something a tad more sophisticated, choose from several swanky wine bars like The Pasta Tree Restaurant & Wine Bar or Balzac Wine Bar. Both are within easy walking distance of the waterfront. When you’re ready to kick up your heels, head to Hot Water Wherehouse, a popular dance club that offers lessons in salsa, swing, tango, and more.

Since most of my recommendations will have you spending the bulk of your time near the waterfront, around the Third Ward or the downtown district, consider booking a hotel near this area to make it easier to get around. As I’m a huge IHG fan when I travel, my recommendations include the InterContinental Milwaukee and the Kimpton Journeyman, which are central to the attractions I outlined. And really, you can never go wrong with a four- or five-star property for your honeymoon experience.
